What You Need To Know About Pruning Bonsai Trees

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Lee Dobbins Pruning bonsai trees is one of the most important things you will have to do as a bonsai enthusiast. Generally, you will be pruning two parts of your bonsai: the roots, which is the bottom part of the plant, and the foliage, which is the top part of the plant. Pruning your bonsais is one of the more interesting aspects of growing these interesting plants and is a way to let your creativity shine. Root pruning is important because it allows the tree to grow new roots. Because of their small containers, the roots of bonsai trees are often stunted in growth. By pruning the root system of your bonsai regularly, you will ensure that the plant has the space needed to grow new roots, which in turn helps the plant absorb moisture and nutrients from the soil. As with any other plant, the root structure is critical to the growth and health of your bonsai. On the other hand, pruning a bonsai trees foliage is also vital if only for aesthetic purposes. If you are a bonsai owner, you probably have a specific design in mind for your tree. Pruning will help you achieve the results you desire. Pruning can help shape your tree into the form you want as well as removes any dead leaves to help keep it healthy and beautiful. Also, dont forget that the roots and the foliage of your bonsai tree are interconnected. When you reduce the foliage (or number of leaves) that your tree has, you are also reducing the strain on its roots. In other words, the less leaves there are, the less work the roots have to do to keep them alive. The amount of pruning you will do will depend heavily on your plans for the tree. It is best for you to have a plan here before you begin. Remember that the changes that you make to your tree are permanent! If you cut a branch off, that branch is gone forever, and you will have to wait for a new one to take its place. Remember to prune your tree gently - if you are removing leaves pinch them off with your fingers and dont use sharp or harsh tools. Most people like to prune off branches that cross the trunk or each other. Why? Because it isnt very pretty to look at. So unless you think you can rewire the branch and force it to grow in another direction, cut it off. Branches that stick out towards you are also common pruning targets. Of course, what you prune from your plant should be your personal decision. What is really important is that you find your bonsai tree beautiful; what others think of it is a secondary consideration. Trust your own good taste. Remember: pruning your bonsai trees is supposed to be fun! Dont get too worked up if your trees dont turn out the way you want them at first. If you keep learning and practicing your botanical skills, the day will soon come when your bonsai will be the envy of your neighbors! The Resurrection is Past Already? 2 Timothy 2: 16 - 18, Part 3 of 4

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

By William Bell, Jr. Next, to argue that the resurrection was past already, as we have seen above separates this doctrine from that of the apostles. More particularly, it severs resurrection from the atoning work of Christ. Jesus was raised as the firstfruits. But now is Christ risen from the dead and has become the firstfruits of them that slept, (1 Corinthians 15:20). This means that he was the beginning of the resurrection. Moreover, it meant that the last days’ resurrection had begun in him. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive, (15: 22) However, the resurrection which Paul affirmed in Christ would consummate at the time called the end, which time equates with the A.D. 70 destruction of Jerusalem. See Matthew 24:14, 34. The end is the fall of the Jewish temple at the end of the age in 70 A.D. Paul and his readers saw the end of the ages coming in their day, (1 Corinthians 10:11). Since the doctrine of Hymanaeus and Philetus taught that the resurrection was complete before the end of the age, therefore before the temple was destroyed, they were giving the Jews of the first century a false hope in the continuation of the temple ministry, the law and the sacrificial system of the old covenant priesthood. This would lead, not only to the overthrow of the faith of Christians but to the destruction of many unbelieving Jews, who would not recognize that God would destroy the temple, (Acts 6:14). Such denial of Jesus parousia and the overthrow of the temple in 70 A.D. opened the door for false messianic hopes of deliverance by the Jews, (well documented in the first century in biblical and non-biblical sources) causing hundreds of thousands of Jews to perish in the siege. (See Josephus, Wars of the Jews). This delusion continues to this day among evangelicals, Zionists and Jews in support of modern day Israel, who deny the scriptures and foolishly look for another Jesus to save them from their colossal error by setting up camp in a land for which they now have no covenantal right. Therefore, to argue for a resurrection already past, circumvents the work of Christ as the firstfruits, and attributes the resurrection to some power and authority outside of him. (Compare 1 Corinthians 6:14). Early on in the ministry of the apostles, they got into big trouble with the government and powers that be of Judaism, (the priests and the Sanhedrin council) because they preached in Jesus, the resurrection out from among the dead. (Acts 4:1, 2) For this, they were apprehended and jailed. (see part 4) William Bell, Jr., is a popular speaker on Covenant Eschatology and the author of the book, The Re-Examination, a study of the last days, the coming of Christ. Hanukkah Or Sushi? The Big Cross-Cultural Dating Debate

Monday, January 28th, 2008

By Kum Martin It has been often said that it is better to pick a partner who shares your interests may it be sports, books, fishingbut carried to the extreme, it causes people to narrow down the type of people they would even consider going out with. It is perfectly understandable that people who share something tend to stick together, from sports enthusiasts to the Chinese people that in whatever part of the planet build their own little towns to the Afro-Americans on the block. Culture and language binds similar peoples, but isolate others what happens is a spiral of forging bonds and widening gaps, forcing the same people to look into the same things. Fortunately, the recent years has seen different cultures and traditions infused, either spurred by proximity, global economy, or technological advance. However, in dating, people prefer to go out with familiarity. This is all good, but there is also a lot to be gained from a cross-cultural affair. For one, although some people still squint when they see odd-matched couples (a petite Chinese girl with a bulky redheaded man or a blonde girl with a lanky Indian guy), it is great to see that however slow our progress is in accepting that deep down we’re all just humans breathing the same air, we are moving in the right direction. Slowly, cultures, beliefs, ideas and recipes are being shared together, contributing to a merging of traditions and thought, and at the same time enriching individuals with a better, wider understanding of different ethnicities. And, if in the end, it does not work out, look at the bright side. At least you learned a few Yiddish phrases or experienced some excellent Japanese cuisine. Tips on Keeping a Food Diary

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

By Susan Du Plessis One of the most powerful tools in weight loss success, apart from eating correctly and adequate exercise, is keeping a food log or nutritional journal. A nutritional journal is basically a record of what you ate every day and helps you to asses your eating patterns, while identifying potential unhealthy patterns. Its both scary and amazing to see, in black and white just how much food you are consuming every day. While you may think youre eating too little, or not eating any junk food, having a record of it in your food diary will ensure that you know exactly what youve eaten, which may help you get to the root of any weight problems. Keeping a record of your food intake, not only helps you identify your eating patterns now, but it may also be a very handy tool in helping you create a nutritional program that keeps you satisfied, happy and healthy. Here are a few helpful tips to help you start your own nutritional journal: * Write it ALL down: Whether you ate healthy food or not, write it down. By excluding foods you think make you look bad, you will only be cheating yourself. * Dont forget the little things: Things like coffee, sugar, soft drinks, juices, milk, sauces, dressings and gravies all add up, so dont forget to document when you ate these too. * Quantity: It is important to write down how much and which foods you ate. Now this doesnt mean you have to go around with a scale attached to your pocket, but remember to note the size of the portion, for instance, half a cup of brown rice with about 200g of fillet steak and 2 tablespoons of creamy pepper sauce. * Mood monitor: Its a good idea to record your mood and how each food made you feel. For instance, if you were in a stressful meeting with the boss and ate a chocolate straight after, you can pinpoint that when you are feeling stressed you eat chocolate. This may seem silly at first but it really helps you pinpoint emotional problems. Mobile Phone Deals - Choose According To Your Needs

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Adam_Jaylin]Adam Jaylin The mobile phone industry has seen a tremendous growth in the past few years. It is considered as the best source of being connected with our near and dear ones. Along with the mobile phones, mobile phone deals are equally important for us. The two useful types of mobile phone deals are pay as you go and the contract mobile phone deal. With a pay as you go deal, you have to buy a handset and a plan which can suit your communication needs. The benefit with this deal is that you can change your network service provider, if you are not satisfied with the tariff rates and the services of the service provider. Moreover, if you travel a lot then also you can easily change your network service provider and reduce your roaming cost. However, a major disadvantage with this plan is that while making an important call, you might realize that you are short of credit, which can become a problem for you. On the other hand, with a contract mobile phone deal, you can get a handset with a connection by the network service provider. These deals offer free line rental for certain months. The 12 months free line rental and 18 months free line rental are popular contract deals in the UK market. These deals can provide you the handset either free of cost or with lower cost. In addition to this, you can get many benefits like free minutes, free messages and lower tariff rates. But, one major disadvantage with this deal is that, once you sign up a contract, you cant change the network service provider till the contract period is over. So, you need to prioritize you needs and then choose the [http://www.ukonlinemarket.co.uk/mobile/]mobile phone deals which can cater to your communication needs in the best possible way. Shimpaku Juniper Also Known As The Smoke Of The Volcano Is Extremely Popular With Bonsai Artists

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

By Tim Gorman The Shimpaku Juniper was discovered in Japan just over a century ago. The Shimpaku Juniper is known as the “smoke of the volcano” because of its beautifully patterned swirling trunk. Unfortunately, largely due to its popularity as a bonsai, this juniper is now all but extinct in its natural state and is very difficult to find growing wild anywhere. The Shimpaku Juniper maxes out at two to three feet high and greatly resembles a bush. Its first foliage is needle-like, but as it matures its foliage becomes like soft scales. The Shimpaku Juniper is not too temperamental — it thrives in sunshine, but is happy in the shade and can endure fluctuating extremes in temperature. Furthermore, the Shimpaku Juniper needs rocky and well-drained soil and a good misting every day during the growing season. Branching can be increased by pinching new growth and the Shimpaku Juniper should be pruned throughout the year. During the growing season, all unwanted branches should be removed and roots should be gradually pruned, removing less than a third of the roots at a time. The best time to wire is in the early winter, when the Shimpaku Juniper tree is dormant and its branches can get used to new positions. Wiring old, brittle wood is not a good idea, but new growth easily accommodates the wiring. Take care to never allow the wire to pierce the bark of a Shimpaku Juniper tree. A new Shimpaku Juniper tree should be re-potted every other year until it reaches 10 years old. After that, re-potting every three or four years is sufficient. A newly re-potted Shimpaku Juniper tree should be protected from wind and direct sun for two months. Spider mites can be a problem for the Shimpaku Juniper and you will know their presence if your junipers foliage turns yellow. Spraying insecticidal soap can help, or for a more natural repellent, you can use a solution of tobacco soaked overnight in water. How To Look Thinner

Monday, January 21st, 2008

By Roy Thomsitt There is no need to worry too much if your weight loss programme is going along slowly. That is often the case. If you want to give yourself a boost, though, and at least look thinner, there are a few tips that may help you. There is no harm in a bit of illusion, especially if it can boost your confidence. Here are just a few of the tips: 1. This one is for women, as make-up can be a friend in this illusion of looking thin. It is a special tool that can make some changes in favour of a thinner looking you. a. A good tan can make you look thinner! Stay in the sun or go to a beauty saloon, and use a tanning lotion, or whatever it takes to tan your skin. If you use a tanning lotion, use more under the cheeks, as the coloured areas will look deeper. That will make your face look thinner than it really is. b. The use of a lot of eye make up can make your eyes bigger. The bigger your eyes look, the smaller your face will appear to others. c. Pay attention to your eyebrows, for the same reasons as in b. d. You can even make up your legs; yes, really, why not? Put a vertical line of oil on the middle part of your legs, so that it makes your bone shine. You will find that your legs, due to the extra shine, actually appear a bit longer! 2. This next trick works well both for men and women. It has to do with the manner in which you arrange your hair. The more volume you give to your hair, the better it will be for making your face look smaller. Once done, try to remember to play with it from time to time. 3. The clothes you wear can deceive the eye as to your true size, and thus make you look thinner: a. Dont use clothes that are too colourful, as that will only attract more eyes on the areas that you really would like to hide. Chose black or dark blue clothes, as they can make you look up to 5 kilos thinner. b. When it comes to skirt length, for those who want to to look a bit thinner than they really are, you should choose knee length skirts. Shorter ones will show off just how fat those legs are, and longer ones accentuate thick ankles. c. Another little trick for men and women is to use vertical stripes. That can apply to trousers, skirts, shirts, dresses, blouses etc. On blouses and shirts, use buttons, because they create a vertical line. The same effect can be reproduced with long zippers. d. Loosen the pockets, and avoid filling them up. Full pockets add bulk, not the visual effect you are looking for when you are trying to look thinner. 4. Always be aware of the position of your body and your posture. A correct position can make you appear up to three centimetres taller than you are. Keep in mind these tricks and work on your illusion of looking thinner. Also, you can use your imagination to discover more! The Hidden Agenda of Interviews

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

By Joel Vance Its Not What They Ask - The Hidden Agenda of Interviews What do you think youre going to an interview for? To list your qualifications and discuss whats on your resume? Thats just the tip of the iceberg, and youre the Titanic if you dont go in with at least an idea of what is behind their questions. Sure, there are the standard questions, because the basic information has to be conveyed some way, and besides reading your resume, they like to see you sweat and whether you can be caught out with any inconsistencies between what is on paper, and what comes out of your mouth. But interviews can be full of potholes that you wont even see coming, because youve been lulled into a false sense of bonhomie by the pleasant manner of the recruiter. Before you know it, and sometimes even without knowing it, youre spilling all your little job secrets, your insecurities, and clues as to your character or work ethics. Preparation as always, is the key. Having talent and being committed to your employer wont cut any mustard, if the interviewer snags a juicy bit out of something you just said, and tosses it back at you, only to be greeted with a blank stare and stuttering. Its not what you want out of the job, its what you can bring to the job. Face it, you can be the most qualified (technically) candidate on the planet, but youre not going to get the position on that alone. Do your homework and find out what the company wants in the person who does get the job. What do they expect in the way of job performance? How do they view initiative? Then when youre interviewed, give them a potential employee who has all that and the technical skills. Because a successful interview is not always about what you can tell them, but about what they want to hear. Employers want people who are not only going to keep the company running, but who are going to take it to new levels of success. You can tell an interviewer what youre capable of, but how are you going to sell them on your aptitude and attitude? Show them, thats how! Dont just say I work well with others, tell them how you involved different departments in a cooperative effort to cut waste within the office, and how your past employer benefited from it, as well as how the company team enjoyed their joint efforts. Never mind boasting that you have a nose for new things. Give them a rundown (not a brag list) of new procedures that you initiated, which resulted in more efficient operations at your last job. Or tell them about the ideas you presented, which were incorporated into the company marketing plan, resulting in increased profits for the last year. As stated in The Perfect Interview Book (www.theperfectinterview.com) interviews are not just fact-finding missions. Recruiters and company interviewers are looking beyond the person in front of them, to find the right one for the job. And the applicant who gives them a potential employee with depths to be plumbed to the companys benefit, is the one whos going to get that job.
